Guidance and Helpful Hints for Recipe Preparation
-
All meat ingredients should be offered raw unless otherwise specified
-
Use a digital gram scale to weigh your food ingredients.
-
For supplements that require minute amounts, prepare in batches (e.g. one month). Measure out a month's quantity of the supplement and mix very well with pumpkin pureè, e.g., and, divide evenly into silicon molds and freeze.
-
All vegetables should be well-cooked and pureèd. Fruits should also be pureèd. Pureèing allows for better digestibility and nutrient bioavailability.
-
For recipes including whole bone, we recommend using a meat grinder to minimize the risk of choking. Never feed cooked bone. Cooked bone is susceptible to splintering and harming your dog.
-
Please use the exact food or supplement brands when listed, as that ingredient has specific nutrients that make your recipe complete and balanced. A replacement ingredient may not keep the diet balanced. If you have any difficulty sourcing brand specific ingredients, please contact me for alternatives.
-
If offering fish oil, please offer these at the time of feeding to prevent oxidative damage to the oil. Mixing the oil into the base recipe and refrigerating/freezing the food will not prevent damage to the oils and will decrease their nutritive benefits.
-
For optimal nutrition, I recommend not making more than 3 months worth of frozen food. Frozen thawed foods can be fed up to 72 hours after defrosting. For frozen storage longer than two weeks, add 150-200 IU of vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) per pound (454 grams) of food. Mix well into food to preserve the batch.

For cooked recipes, gently cook meat in the oven at 225 degrees Farenheit for 10 - 15 minutes.
